In this class of big techniques, we will create mini mixed media “mosaicons”. In scaling back the size of the finished icon, we will be able to really focus on all of the overlapping techniques that utilize all that “stuff” you’ve amassed over the years! These mosaic icons are comprised of personalized polymer clay tiles that are hand painted and stamped. In personalizing each of the tiles, one can create a meaningful piece of art that has lasting significance. These tiles will be combined with found objects, jewelry parts, tesserae and beads, the end result being a jewel-like surface. We will really push polymer clay to the limit, embedding metal and paper into clay. This will be a workshop that combines demos with hands-on experience and students will come away from class with a beautiful piece of art for the wall.

supply list
- A 7x9 inch wood plaque (1/2 inch or so thickness). They sell them at Michaels for about 2.00) or similar sized piece of wood….can be square, rectangle or even a tiny triptych.
- 5 packages of colored clay, either Premo or Sculpey III polymer clay. (Bring 3 of the same color; the others can be of your choosing) Buy at Michael’s during their .99cent sale.
- A rolling pin/acrylic roller-even a piece of PVC pipe works.
- A small bottle of Weldbond Glue
- A small bottle of either gold, silver or copper metallic paint
- Assorted paintbrushes, to include a fine detail brush.
- Rubberstamps- if you have any favorites you want to use, bring them along!
- Ephemera and doo-dads! Bring metal pieces to embed in the clay like charms, jewelry parts, beads, Milagros, nails, brads, small frames (volcano arts), buttons and rhinestones. Bring collage images to personalize your Icon and make it your own. See pictures on my website for ideas.
- Also bring a small bag or two of commercial tile (less than an inch in size). These will help fill in some of the areas of your Icon and really give the look of a mixed media mosaic. They are also sold at Michaels.
