A self portrait in poetry and photography. Images and words lyrically combine to make a rich self portrait artist book/journal. We will work with poetry, writing, and self portrait images to create meaningful pages. Techniques will include inkjet-gel medium transfers, painted backgrounds, layered tissue paper collages, mark making on photographs, creating a portrait stencil, and writing directly on mesh.

kit fee: $5 supply list
- Kit fee of $5 provides patina solution, deli paper, tissue paper, sewing pattern tissue , eyelets for pockets, images to make foam stamps, and an individual portrait stencil to cut.*(see homework)
- Supply list:
- 2 22îx30îpieces of 140 lb cold pressed watercolor paper, prepped for class. *(see homework)
- 2 pieces of mat board, chip board illustration board, 10î x11î, gesso front and back
- pkg of brass or copper fine wiremesh
- pkg of alphabet stickers
- 4 yds of freezer paper
- small tub of goldenís regular gel medium ñ glossy
- liquid acrylic medium, glossy- cheap stuff
- basic supplies: glue stick, scissors, pencil, baby wipes, something to hold water, paint brushes
- 1 piece of 6mm fun foam (the thick stuff),1 or 2 pieces of self adhesive fun foam (2mm)
- exacto, extra blades, cutting mat
- Small pack of water soluble oil pastels- the cheap ones like Portfolio ones are perfect
- Markmaking tools: Gel pens (white, others if you have) china marker- black (others if you have) a brush tip marker that will write on photos of over paint.
- Paint: bone black goldenís liquid acrylic, titan buff goldenís liquid acrylic, plus a small selection of the 50 cent- $1 craft paints in your color palette, please include grey and white
- Four 2î binder rings
- Hole punch (regular loose leaf size) hand held or hammerable

- *Your self-portrait stencil:
- You will need to email an image of yourself to ludwiglk@aol.com by March 1, 2009. The image should be a head and shoulders shot, with adequate lighting and contrast. Send an image no larger than 1.5 MB in jpeg format. If I have not received your image, I will provide an image of the Dali Lama for you practice with in class. I will convert your photo and print it on card stock for you to use.
- ** Your paper
- Tear your paper in half lengthwise- so you have two long rectangles, and then fold into even thirds and tear down into three pieces- for a total of six pieces from each sheet. (approx 10x11 in size, more or less) You will then please coat each piece, front and back with gesso. (doing both sides keeps the paper from warping)
- *** Images and words
- Ah, this is the important bit!
- Bring copies of six different images of you. At least one should include your full person, standing. These do not need to be front-on shots. Be creative, be poetic. Print one set of all of these on regular old copier paper using your inkjet printer. Print another set on decent matte finish photo paper. Copy a third set in b & w on your inkjet or a copier.
- Gather some photos for backgrounds- trees, hillsides, landscapes, housesÖ print as inkjet on regular old copy paper.
- Two photos should be of other people, places or things with which you have a relationship. Print on photo and plan paper.
- Choose six poems- more if you like, and please bring two copies of each, choose with your images in mind!
- From an old book, pull or copy six random pages.
