If any of you are like I am when I travel, you gather hoards of trinkets and treasures along the journey’s path. What to do with those reminders of wonderful times once you get home? Don’t stash things away in the back of a drawer, forgotten along with odds and ends; come spend the day with me using various assemblage, collage and jewelry techniques to reconstruct an old cigar box into something beautiful, sacred and cherished. We’ll discuss wire working, hole punching/drilling for eyelets and brads, divider assembly for the box interior, padded cloth attachment for the “pincushion” box removable lid (thanks to ribbons, the box lid can be removed and hung as a separate piece of artwork on the wall; so can the box itself), and various ways to attach dimensional objects to the inside or outside of the lid. We’ll also discuss my “willow” wrap as a way to create a striking closure for the box. Be tucking away all of the various treasures you want to use for the box construction and to tuck within its compartments; beads or pearls need to slip onto 20 gauge wire. This class can be taken separately as a one day class, but also fits with a series of three (book, necklace, box) if you wish to take a three day workshop at artfest with me.

• - vintage cigar box, preferably thin wood or cardboard with paper hinged lid
• - awl
• package each of 1/8” long eyelets, your choice of metal*
• package copper brads from coffee break design.com
• Eyelet setter*
• Dremel, if you have one, for drilling
• Fiskars hand drill, if you have one (can be found at michael’s)
• Small lightweight hammer (earplugs, optional!)
• Small metal bench block, optional – available from volcanoarts.biz
• Cutting pad and utility knife (exacto), metal ruler, scissors set of small wireworking pliers – jewelry sized – including needle nosed pliers, wire snips – set available from volcanoarts.biz
• PVA glue*, aintbrush, cup for water, paper towels
• Scrap papers for embellishment (old print, music sheets, old photo album pages, photos, notes, scrapbooking paper, wallpaper, etc)
• Fabric and lace scraps (I used two layers for interior of box lid, as well as fabric to layer on outside of box and to line interior of box sections)
• Small amount of batting for padding fabric
• Large eyed needle and small amount of embroidery thread
• stamps and pads, optional
• Wire (copper is fine) - I use 20 gauge, readily found in craft stores or floral places – or picture hanging sections of hardware store) – also available from volcanoarts.biz
• Sturdy ribbon, no wider than ½” –2 yards will do
• Wooden rulers, two
• Treasures and charms to attach with wire and ribbon (think about beads, charms, pencils, old paintbrushes, tiny bottles, beach glass, twigs, old photographs, keys, pressed leaves and flowers – anything that might “tell a story” from your travels
