If any of you are like I am when I travel, you gather hoards of trinkets and treasures along the journey’s path. What to do with those reminders of wonderful times once you get home? Don’t stash things away in the back of a drawer, forgotten along with odds and ends; come spend the day with me working on techniques that will teach you how to attach and incorporate all sorts of charms and mementos, natural and man made – sticks, stones, leaves, dried flowers, beads, special fabric snippets, paper memorabilia – into a field book of sorts. The book you’ll loosely assemble in today’s workshop will be a casual, free spirited bundle of mismatched pages in which you will be able to tuck small keepsakes from your trip. Methods discussed will be wire work, collage, mica work, some rough sewing, and small shadowbox construction. Spend the coming months tucking away the most humble of your treasures in a zip lock bag; you’ll raise them to spirited heights with a book that you’ll want to hold close to your heart forever.

This class can be taken separately as a one day class, but also fits with a series of three (book, necklace, box) if you wish to take a three day workshop at artfest with me.

• Japanese screw punch* with #3 tip to accommodate 1/8” eyelets
• awl
• package each of 1/8” long and 1/8” short eyelets, your choice of metal*
• package copper brads from coffee break design.com
• Eyelet setter*
• Small lightweight hammer (earplugs, optional!)
• Small metal bench block, optional – available from volcanoarts.biz
• Cutting pad and utility knife (exacto), metal ruler, scissors set of small wireworking pliers – jewelry sized – including needle nosed pliers, wire snips – set available from volcanoarts.biz
• PVA glue*
• Masking tape
• Scrap papers for embellishment (old print, music sheets, old photo album pages, photos, notes, scrapbooking
• paper, wallpaper, etc)
• Fabric and lace scraps, small amount
• Paints, stamps and pads
• Paintbrush, cup for water, paper towels
• Wire, smaller and larger gauge (I used 20 gauge and 26 gauge – readily found in craft stores or floral places – or picture hanging sections of hardware store)
• Sturdy ribbon, no wider than ½” –2 yards will do
• Vintage book covers - they need not match (mind don’t); mine was no larger than 5” x 7”
• Matboard cut to size of book cover – four to six
• Mica, package of larger pieces, volcanoarts.biz
• Pencil, pen, whatever your favorite writing instrument choice happens to be
• Treasures and charms to attach with wire and ribbon (think about beads, charms, pencils, old paintbrushes, tiny bottles, beach glass, twigs, old photographs, keys, pressed leaves and flowers – anything that might “tell a story” from your travels
