Awl & Awl

Daniel Essig

Bookbinders, collagists, potters, metal smiths, woodworkers, printmakers, mixed media artists all use some sort of an awl. Whether we pierce, poke, scribe, indent, scratch, grasp or mark the awl is an essential tool. In this workshop we will create a set a 3 awls that will perform a variety of tasks no matter what media you may call home. We will craft our handles from any material we can easily drill a small hole into. Recycled handles from old tools-paint brushes, rubber stamps and chisels are ideal. Branches, architectural elements, wooden forms, bone, antler, etc. will also work. Building a tool that fits your own hand is a highly satisfying task that is only exceeded when you put the tool to use.
