Book of Mica
Daniel Essig
Learn to work with the remarkable material mica. We will use both the natural form of this many layered silicate mineral and a man made mica sheet. The pages will be assembled after exploring various techniques that emphasize the unique qualities of this material. Our book will be bound with a historic Coptic binding technique dating back to the 4th century.

Supply List:
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Awl
- White glue (not Elmers)
- Glue brush
- Sturdy Scissors
- Assorted binder clips
- Fine line permanent black marker
- Exacto knife and blades
- Small cutting matte
- Thin or light weight collage materials: decorative and text papers, photos, insect wings, leafs, feathers, etc.
- Contrasting patterns and imagery tend to work better.
- If you already own one and if it is convenient in packing please bring a dremmel tool, I will supply the bits.
Kit Fee Includes: - Assortment of Mica (majority of the fee), waxed linen thread, needles, drill bits, extra PVA glue.

Daniel Essig is a studio artist and workshop leader living in Asheville, North Carolina. Daniel teaches book arts workshops at book centers, craft schools and colleges. He is a recipient of the North Carolina Artist Fellowship Grant. Dan exhibits his work nationally and is in numerous private and public collections. Recently his work has been collected by the Smithsonian Renwick Museum and The Charlotte Smith Collection of Miniature Books at the University of Iowa Libraries. Many of Daniel’s sculptural pieces are featured in The Penland Book of Handmade Books.
