Breaking Beauty

Katherine England

This is an extremely technical, creative and satisfying art exercise. Can one class be all that? Using a photograph as a beginning we will use the mesh method to reproduce in glass and tile a portrait of your choosing. Though placement of features will be precise, you will use your creativity to make that face unique, then place that face in a setting that can be playful or simply magical. It is up to you. We spend the second day grouting (2-color method) our finished piece.

I highly recommend you have had some mosaic experience before taking this class since the focus will practically be a lesson in painting with glass. If you thought you enjoyed mosaics before you will fall in love with this new technique. Final piece will be about 10”x10” and ready for framing. I love putting mine in old frames that I have distressed. Please visit my website for more examples.

Katherine England is a muralist as well as an art teacher at the Muckenthaler Museum and several local schools and adult programs in Orange County. Though born in Hawaii she was lucky to be raised a child of the '60's near San Francisco. The colors and movement in art during this decade profoundly influenced her as a youth and show up as such in her art. Her favorite medium right now is tesserae and she loves breaking, nipping, melting it and coaxing into playful patterns and whimsical figures. Her largest mosaic piece is 40' by 8' but she also enjoys smaller and realistic portraits.  She lives with her 4 amazing and beautiful kids in Fullerton, Ca.
