Soldered Mosaic Lavalliere

This is a few mini workshops in one! Not only will we be learning how to make a beautiful ornamental pendant out of vintage china pieces, but we will be doing a little metalsmithing (texturizing), soldering and working with ice resin as well. Come spend the day with me and I’ll share many tips with you as we begin the process of creating one of a kind, ready to show off adornments!

Supply List:

• 100 watt soldering iron with stand and rheostat (i recommend upland 100 or weller 100)- here’s a link to what i use ( http://www.etsy.com/listing/8128656/jewelry-soldering-pack-inland-100-watt)
• bottle of instant krazy glue, BRUSH ON (purple lid)
• tin snips
• scissors
• small junky paintbrush to apply flux
• 2 washcloths and a handtowel
• bench block
• ball peen hammer, for texturizing, i use a little 6” hammer from Making Memories from Michael’s
• chunky nail file
• dremel with sanding bit (bring a few extra)
• old cookie sheet (this is your workstation)
• chain nose pliers
• a few paper plates and a plastic container with wide mouth to cover your piece as the resin dries
• a few charms to hang under your piece (we will make more than one pendant)
• rhinestones or 3d objects to put in your piece
• mosaic tile nippers, http://www.delphiglass.com/sale-specials/glass-tools-sale/mosaic-tile-nippers.html
• gardening gloves to protect hands while nipping
• safety goggles or glasses
• some chain, rosary beads/linked chain, ribbon and other items to form a necklace
• china pieces: you can bring a plate or bring some broken pieces of a plate. I do not recommend using tile or chunky crockery. You are looking to use the flat part (middle) of a plate. It is hard to use the sides of the plate as it doesn’t sit flat. so when picking your plate, you are looking for the the design in the middle of the flat part of the plate. the thicker the plate, the harder it is to cut.

  a rheostat helps control the temperature of your soldering iron. I consider this a must for my soldering kit. It is very frustrating to have your iron get too hot or not hot enough - and your rheostat will help avoid this!
