Turn Me On, Baby

Katherine England

A student suggested this idea to me a few years ago but I only recently started playing with it and it has ended up being one of my favorite art projects. Starting with a basic switch plate the challenge is to create a piece of detailed art to surround the opening. I started using brass insects and dismantled jewelry to create faces or villages or whatever else inspired me. We will use millefiori, an italian round tile and nano geometric tiles to weave patterns around the edges and finish off with copper foil. This is a quick and easy way to pick up mosaic techniques in a day and walk away with a tiny piece of furniture. I will supply everything you need for this project including the Italian millefiori. I will have various sizes of switch plates available and you are welcome to take on a second one if you finish the first. I will also bring a small supply of brass creatures to purchase to make your piece even more whimsical

Kit Fee: $17

Katherine England is a muralist as well as an art teacher at the Muckenthaler Museum and several local schools and adult programs in Orange County. Though born in Hawaii she was lucky to be raised a child of the '60's near San Francisco. The colors and movement in art during this decade profoundly influenced her as a youth and show up as such in her art. Her favorite medium right now is tesserae and she loves breaking, nipping, melting it and coaxing into playful patterns and whimsical figures. Her largest mosaic piece is 40' by 8' but she also enjoys smaller and realistic portraits. She lives with her 4 amazing and beautiful kids in Fullerton, Ca.
