Collage à Trois

Think collage on steroids and prepare yourself for a fun workshop that really packs a wallop! Expanding on the Family Tree metal collage project in our Metal Craft Discovery Workshop book, students will explore color and composition and create a truly unique metal collage using deconstructed tin cans, scrap metals, a tintype or cdv (carte de viste) photo, and even a few optional 3-dimensional objects as your palette. Traditional canvas, paper, gel medium and brushes will be replaced with a wood substrate, colorful tin cans, vintage imagery, hammer, nails and lots of imagination! Whether your tastes lean towards the serious, the whimsical, or the surreal, this class will give new meaning to your definition of collage.

So start gathering a variety of tin cans and come prepared to kick collage up a few notches.

Note: if everyone brings some extra tin cans to put into a community pile to share, the design possibilities become endless. All levels.

• a variety of deconstructed tins - to save class time and for easy travel, remove the tops & bottoms with a can opener, cut down the seam with heavy duty tin snips aka aviation snips from any hardware store, and flatten the tins with a rubber mallet so they will pack flat
• a focal image. either a tintype photo or a cdv (carte de viste) depending on the look you’re going for. see the class examples. these images are approximately 4”h”x 2.5”w. eBay or Etsy is a great resource. you can bring additional smaller images if you’d like
• * detail tin shears to cut metal
• *a metal punch that will punch 1/16” holes in metal - we offer 2 – the 1.25mm is preferred
• *a small hammer (a 6” eyelet setting hammer is perfect for this)
• *a small rubber head hammer to flatten metal if you have one
• *a heavy duty awl that is sturdy enough to puncture metal – we offer a great one
• bent nose pliers ONLY
• a ruler and pencil and ultrafine marker
• a 1” foam or nylon/synthetic flat brush
  
  Optional:
• a few small 3-dimensional objects to incorporate
• any other metals that speak to you – can be soda pop cans, rust, etc.
• double face tape - either a sheet or a small roll - craft store or office supply
