A Deck of Roses

Orly Avineri

Henri Matisse once said: “There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted.” Let’s do just that! Let’s forget all the roses ever painted and conduct our very own study of roses, free of pressure, free of rules. We’ll depict our roses as we see them, not as we think they are supposed to look like. In this workshop we’ll be creating a personal collection of cards, a deck of roses. The creating of this collection will give you a unique opportunity to move passionately between cards, to be immersed in a tactile and sensorial experience. With a sense of rebellion we’ll be piling up layers of images, papers, textures, inks, washes, varnishes, etc., creating movement, richness, excitement, our very own beautiful and intimate ‘Rose Parade’.

I truly believe that the need to be witnessed by the self and by others is a human core need, to be fulfilled by the act of creating, therefore, a compelling part of my journey is the teaching of art making and visual journaling. As a young adult I had studied Fine Arts in an artists' village nestled at the foot of the mystical Mount Carmel, Israel, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and later, Graphic Design at the University of Arts in the contemporary yet history-drenched city of Utrecht, The Netherlands. Now living in a city by the beach of Southern California with my family, I take in all the magnificence of the visual languages I have acquired along the way. I am passionate about my process of marrying multiple media to create works that are both personal and expressive.
