This is a fantastic workshop during our day we will use several different mediums to create a Santos. We will strip away the religious aspects of the Santos and put a personal and modern twist on it. This figure will stand over 30 inches tall. You will antique and distress the wood frame that I will build for you. We will start our day sculpting the head with my “you can’t fail technique” really it is pretty easy and everyone is successful, then we paint and attach the head and arms to the body. In the afternoon we will create a covering (clothes) and add personal accessories for your Santos. The hardest part of this class is to decide what your personal Santos represents to you, the patron saint of nature or travel or maybe art retreats.
Supply List:
- Clay 8 oz. Sculpey Original (I use white)
- 1oz Titan buff
- 1oz Quinacridone/Nickel Azo Gold
- 1oz Burnt Umber
- 1oz Titanium White – for the above four paints I like to use golden acrylics.
- 8 oz of white acrylic paint (you can use craft paint such as Delta) this is for the stand that will be under the clothes.
- Assortment of paint brushes, flat and a fine point detail brush or your favorites to paint eyes mouth and over all face. One inexpensive 1” brush.
- Clay tools if you have them or dental tools, bone folder, orange stick any small tool that you can use to smooth around eyes and in tight areas. Don’t spend a lot of money I will bring tools to share.
- Clean up rags, wet wipes or paper towels
- 15 inch porcelain doll, I like the dolls that just have a hole in the neck not the ones that have a partial chest plate. I often find mine at the Salvation Army or Goodwill $4 to $7 is all I pay.
- We will be using the head, arms and hands of the porcelain doll, I think it’s ok to use one with a few broken fingers it adds to the antique feeling, we will be removing the hair so don’t be afraid to bring a doll that is well worn.
- 2 yards of old fabric plus some remnants to dress your Santos, I use muted fabrics such as muslin, canvas, linens, cotton, old silk in creams and off whites. Torn and worn linens work great. I would bring one or two pieces that are at least 1 yard and then remnants to rip and layer with. It is fun to use antique table doilies for collars. Bring thread and needles of different sizes, old laces, buttons, string, and any trinkets that you have been saving. Milagros, rosary beads or an old cross will add authenticity to your Santos.
