Santibelli- Saints
Tory Brokenshire
This is a fantastic workshop, during our day we will use several different mediums to create a Santos, Santibelli Italian, Santons French . We will strip away the religious aspects of the Santos and put a personal and modern twist on it. This Santos will stand over 30 inches tall. We will antique and distress the wood frame that I will build for you. We will start our day sculpting, painting and attaching the head and arms to the body. In the afternoon we will create a covering (clothes) and add personal accessories for your Santos.
Supply List:
- Clay 8 oz. Sculpey
- 1oz Titan buff golden acrylics
- Quinacridone/Nickel Azo Gold
- Burnt Umber
- Titanium White
- 8 oz of white acrylic house paint (you can use indoor or outdoor paint)
- Assortment of paint brushes, flat and a fine point detail brush or your favorites to paint eyes mouth and over all face.
- Clean up rags or paper towels
- 15 inch porcelain doll (I often find mine from the Salvation Army or Goodwill $4 to $7 is all I pay)
- We will be using the arms and hands of the porcelain doll, I think it’s ok to use one with a few broken fingers it adds to the antique feeling, we will be removing the hair so don’t be afraid to bring a doll that is worn.
- 2 yards of old fabric plus some remnants to dress your Santibelli. I use muted fabrics such as muslin, canvas, linens, cotton, cheesecloth, old silk in creams and off whites. Torn and worn linens work great. I would bring one or two pieces that are at least 1 yard and then remnants to rip and layer with. Bring thread and needles of different sizes, old laces, buttons, string, and any trinkets that you have been saving. Milagros, rosary beads or an old cross will add authenticity to your Santos.

Art is where I go for strength and pleasure. The urge to make art calls me day and night
and quite often enters my dreams. The idea for a new project sometimes starts with
a single object, a wing, a clock’s main spring or a piece of rusty metal. These found
objects are hunted down and recycled from shops, barn yards, or given to me by family
and friends that want to see what will come out of it.
I have been focusing on the human figure, paper cuts as well as wire work animals
and people. I use a variety of materials in each piece such as metal, canvas, paint,
fabric, man-made objects, as well as natural materials. The main focal point is usually
created first and that will dictate the back ground and major colors. My projects are
unpredictable and extremely rewarding.
When someone falls in love with one of my art pieces, it’s hard not to just give it to
them. My art is made with great pleasure and if it can carry those same feelings to
someone else, that reinforces why I make it. More often now, I have the pleasure to
teach others how to put together assemblage pieces. Through teaching, I am able to
see others unique and individual creativity. I believe there is an artist in all of us, if only
we allow ourselves the time and permission to try.
