The Series

This is a drawing / color theory class using the concepts of doing a series as the vehicle to create great works of art. Our mediums will be ink, acrylic and Shrinky-dinks.

For the drawing portion we will be training the eye to see the world around us for its shapes, angles, lines and curves. Drawing is not a skill of the hand, it is a skill of the eye. Everyone can draw, it is not a matter of can or can't, its a matter of desire and effort to learn. I believe this down to the very center of my core.

For the color theory portion we will be going over color mixing (being able to mix any color you ever desire with only 6 colors) and the concepts of complimentary colors, hue, saturation, value and the different ways of putting color schemes together.

The joy of doing a series is to give focus to your explorations of these techniques while giving your finished art purpose and meaning. The whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts and you will discover your work taking on a life of its own and becoming something more than you ever expected. And through the magic of Shrinky-dink your works will be transformed into something that you can appreciate outside yourself (as if someone else created it) so you can appreciate it with an objective eye vs. the subjective one.

Supply List:

• 1 pack of clear Shrinky Dinks. Any brand will work but make sure it is fully clear, not semi-translucent or opaque.
• Acrylic Paints: get the standard tube acrylic paint, any brand will work. Do not bring craft or liquid acrylic paint because they do not have enough pigment in them and will be frustrating for mixing color. If you want the cheapest but still decent quality go for Liquitex Basics.
  • 2 Reds, one warm and one cool.
  • Warm Reds: Alizarim Crimson, Rose Madder Genuine, Quinadrone Red (recommended).
  • Cool Reds: Cadmium Red Hue (its cheaper than real cadmium red) (recommended), Flame Red.
  • 2 Blues, one warm and one cool.
  • Warm Blues: Ultramarine (recommended), Prussian, Cobalt.
  • Cool Blues: Cerulean (recommended), Pthalo.
  • 2 Yellows, one warm and one cool.
  • Warm Yellows: Cadmium Yellow hue (recommended)
  • Cool Yellow: Hansa Yello Light (recommended), Aureolin Yellow, Lemon Yellow.
  • 1 White: Titanium White (recommended).
• Acrylic Brush: Round number 6 or 8 (recommended)
  
  Optional:
• Acrylic brushes in other size: I always like to have a good variety, some small some large, some flat etc. Dont feel like you need any but if you have them bring them.
• Palette Knife: If you do buy one make sure its metal as the plastic ones work terribly. You can always mix your acrylic with your brush but its tougher to clean and have a bigger risk of contaminating color while mixing (meaning higher frustrations)
• A subject to study for your series. I will provide a large selection of strange fruits and veggies as well as mirrors and of course there's the beautiful grounds of Fort Worden but if there is something you would like to bring to draw then please do so. No photographs because they dont train you how to see your subject, its already been "seen" for you through the eye of the camera.
