Funky Wallpaper People
Anahata Katkin
Working on a large scale can be as easy as working small. In this workshop we will use durable
wallpaper panels as the foundation for our Funky Wallpaper People who can be up to six feet tall!
Find new ways to stretch the way you work and overcome creative blocks. Working large will free
us up to move quickly, spontaneously. Go from little thinking to big thinking. Each person will be
able to complete a full sized panel within the day. (And not to worry panels are easy to roll up and
transport home.)
At Artfest 2008 it was a moving experience to see dozens of panels hanging together at the end
of the day. One workshop produces hundreds of yards of artwork!
Due to limited table sizes and space we will most likely be working on the floor
so we can get maximum workspace. If you have any physical limitations please let me or
Artfest staff know.

Supply List:
- A single roll of textured wallpaper. Standard 20.4 in wide. If you want to conserve space
you can pre-cut your piece to 6 feet tall. You can find pretty cool wallpapers at Lowes,
Home Depot, Ebay, and local home stores. I don’t get anything too fancy. I usually spend
$14.00-$20.00 on a 55 foot roll. (not to worry panels easily roll up to bring home)
- Masking Tape
- 3 big plastic garbage bags
- A Print Roller (any art store or craft store)
- a pizza cutter
- black sumi ink (get cheap stuff)
- A fresh jar of acrylic gel medium (I like soft gel gloss from Golden)
- Large & small brushes.
- White Gesso
- Some kind of small flat bottom tray for rolling inks and paints
- Colored Inks (I like Dr. Ph Martins Bombay brand)
- Good acrylic paints (Golden or Danielle Smith are good) just a few colors is fine.
- Pressed Charcoal
- uniball black pens
- an empty plastic water bottle
- A Mailing Tube at least 22 inches tall (for bringing home your panels)
- Caran D’Ache Crayons
- two plastic pant hangers with clamps
- The following Items will enhance your experience:
- Think large copies! I would find a few faces you love and make the largest color copies of
them that you can. Even make a few blk & white copies for variation. Even 8.5 X 11 faces
look great. Take magazine faces and blow them up big at kinkos. Usual photos can look
awesome just by blowing them up. Also make copies of things you may want to use like
birds, symbols, flowers, old signs, words etc.. Make them as large as possible. I would also
suggest large pre-printed items like newspaper, maps (atlases are cheap), specialty papers,
ribbon trimmings, etc.. I don’t want you to pre-plan your artwork but do think of as many
paper bits and surfaces that would enhance your pot to choose from in class. A few small
things as well. Also bring any papers that can be donated to the group. We will have a pile
for community use. Please add something someone might like to use.
