Description

Our Book of Hours journal and purse workshop is actually two projects in one. We will not only construct a remarkable little all-metal journal, very suitable for your grandest illuminations, but we will also make a beautiful tin purse, adorned with a framed picture under glass, which is custom made to carry the book inside, so you can have your very own artistic “devotional” wherever you happen to be when inspiration strikes.

The book is constructed from copper plated “plumber’s tape” which is altered and antiqued, and students will learn our unique all-metal book binding technique which does not require any sewing. The carrying case is made of an altered tin lunchbox and features a classic painting of the face of the Madonna under glass framed in copper on the lid.

While this workshop is more or less a “project-based” class, there are several ways one could infuse their own creativity into this piece, and students can take the many tips, tricks, and processes taught and integrate them into their own work. Concepts discussed will include, but are not limited to: basic book binding terminology, using heat to alter metal surfaces, cold connector applications for mixed-media, glass cutting, decorating & aging metal with chemical patinas, and MORE! We have extra tools for students to borrow, so don’t run out and spend a fortune on a box of new tools. Most of the tools we use in our classes are already in your garage. If not, we’ve got you covered! We personally guarantee all students will complete their project.
