In this introduction to visual journaling learn how to find your voice on the page. I will walk you through how to begin and continue to work in a visual journal. This class is for people who are just getting into visual journaling and want to begin to develop their own unique voice on the page or for people who are looking for a new approach. Most art supplies – a mixed media arsenal - will be provided and available to demo. There will be lots of illustrated class handouts and resources listings. Class discussions will include: building and using your mixed media arsenal, approaches to lettering, approaches to collage, using a view finder, beginning and maintaining a journaling practice – in your home and on the go - and techniques for finding your voice. There will be plenty of time to work and experiment with materials, techniques and approaches discussed in class. You will take away a series of “Explorations” (a.k.a. homework but much more fun) to keep you going once class is over. Bring a blank journal and leave with at least three to five finished pages. You'll be well on your way to creating your own visual journal and finding your voice on the page.

A Little About ME
I am an artist, wife and mother of two teenagers living on the high plains of Colorado. I’m mad about journaling and have been at it in my studio and on the road for 10 years. I love to cook and eat (not in that order), travel and explore (always, anywhere), garden sporadically (and in small containers), museum hop, blog (exploring life, travel and art – the good stuff) dance (with or without a partner), teach art (big and tiny humans) scavenge and collect (think corvid librarian), am inspired by the intricacies and divine beauty of nature, and am a life long learner and experimenter. In a former life I was Associate Publisher of a nationally circulated environmental magazine called Buzzworm. You can find my work on my blog and in these publications: 1000 Artist Journal Pages by Dawn DeVries Sokol, Beaded Embellishment by Amy Clarke, 500 Beaded Objects by Lark Books, and in issues of Studios Magazine, Beadwork Magazine and Cloth, Paper, Scissors Magazine and in The Brooklyn Art Library’s Sketchbook Project.
