How many times have you packed a multitude of art journaling supplies for your travels and end up never using them? Do you find yourself searching in the latest “How To” book for the list of supplies the artist takes with them when they travel? At this point in my artist journey I am looking to simplify. I dream of spending my time on my inspiration and not unpacking or searching for supplies. Well, I think I have found the secret to the perfect travel art supply for journaling….pencils. They are portable, available, and affordable and when used with modern mediums, can make beautiful, dreamy journal pages.
In this class we will explore a variety of pencil types – graphite, watercolor and colored pencils, to see how far we can take them. We will experiment with layering and see how the use of some mediums will enhance the pencil effects with amazing results. We will be using faces as our muse and I will show you some of my approach to creating a fantasy faces. This class is geared for all levels –no prior drawing experience required, just bring your pencil case and a willingness to play…
Supply List:
- Journal to work in
- Graphite drawing pencils 6B and a 2H or Mechanical Pencil
- Kneaded Eraser
- Pencil Sharpener
- Derwent Inktense Watercolor Pencil Set of 6 or 12
- Prismacolor Colored Pencils PC938 White and PC914 Cream
- Prismacolor Colored Pencils a small selection of colors you wish to use
- Small Watercolor Set like Pelikan Opaque Watercolor set
- Small tube of White Gouache
- Small container of Fluid Acrylic Medium – Matte
- 2 paintbrushes: small round detail brush, large flat or round brush for washes
- Permanent Black Fine Line Pen –Waterproof Ink
- White Gel Pen
- Water container/ rag

A Little About ME
Karen O’Brien is a self taught mixed media artist and teacher.
