Let’s draw in those journals!
For the first hour I’ll set you to working directly in your art journals with a series of easy and non-threatening drawing exercises. (Even if you’ve never drawn before, you will be able to do these - I promise!)
Once you’ve filled about five or six spreads, we’ll take a look at the drawings and decide which ones you will leave as is, and which ones you would like to embellish, paint, enhance, or (in many cases) completely obscure.
I have several mixed media tricks to show you, including my "no-fail, completely-forgiving layered watercolor technique" and my "gesso-and-watercolor polishing method." We’ll also work with acrylic ink and collage, and talk about white space, design, and layout of your pages.
If you want to start adding drawing to your journal work, start here!
Carla Sonheim is a "painter of girls, mother of boys" and keeps busy with galleries, shows, an online store and workshop teaching.
One of her students writes, "Carla just shines and is so gentle and generous that you will work hard all day and come out energised and inspired. Most importantly though, [her] class was a touchstone in my artistic journey, giving me the courage to stop resisting, and open myself to my creative voice."
Carla has taught at ArtUnraveled, Artfest, and Art & Soul. Her forthcoming book, "Drawing Lab for Mixed Media Artists: 52 Creative Exercises to Make Drawing Fun" is due out July 2010 (Quarry Books). She recently moved to Seattle, WA.
