Spiraled re-Creation

It is so fun and satisfying to make your own journal. It’s even more exciting to make a journal that is filled with a mix of upcycled and recycled pages, inspiring you to work in it. Using copies of your artwork, and bits and pieces of ephemera and whatnot, we’ll rework, repurpose and give new life to these items, creating the type of journal that eliminates the fear of the blank page, urging you to jump in and use it. We will do this not only to create the inside pages, but also to create the covers. Then we’ll spiral bind them, making it a lovely journal or sketch book that opens flat or can be turned to use one side at a time. This fun and inspiring workshop will motivate you to make more journals and books when you return home, and the techniques used for birthing the pages can be used in other areas to enliven your art. You’ll leave class with a journal ready to use that evening at the Journal Jam!

This is an easy-going workshop for all experience levels! No experience necessary.

Supply List

• Copies of some of your artwork: black & white, and/or color; made from inkjet printers and/or toner printer/copy machines. Can be copies of your journal pages, paintings, drawings, photographs, writing, etc. Any size is good, even scraps.
• Cardboard for the covers: can be corrugated cardboard, chipboard (cereal boxes, frozen pizza boxes, etc.), mat board or illustration board. You need 2 pieces the size of the book you want to make. (You can either cut them to size before coming, or cut them in class.)
• Mixed paper to use as pages: can be plain, printed, scrap (various kinds and sizes is great)
• Basic Tools: Scissors, glue stick, exacto knife, steel ruler
• Small cutting mat
• Brayer
• Various coloring materials: water soluble oil pastels, watercolor crayons, markers, etc.
• Acrylic paints: white AND several of your favorite colors (cheap craft paint is fine)
• Small container of gel medium (for gluing)
• Small container of gesso.
• Stamps and permanent stamp pads (Staz-on works best!)
• paint brushes for gluing & painting
• Water container for painting
• Collage material: anything goes—bring a small bag for yourself and a small bag to share in the communal stash
  
  Optional
• Hair dryer or heat gun to speed up drying
• Anything else you might like to use, like fun tapes, stapler & staples, etc.
  
  I will provide baby wipes, wax paper, paper towels, various color-making supplies, and the spiral binding machines and supplies for you to use in class.
