This class would work earnestly toward the notion of sketchbook as source for later work, paintings, jewelry, collages, fabric work, or simply as thematic art journals. You would choose a topic or theme for your sketchbook, and a series of activities and technique demos would guide you to the creation of a satisfying series of work in your book. Any topic is open to you, since these needn’t be shown to others unless you so choose, you are free to explore any content, intimate or difficult, something you feel passionately about, something you are responding to right now in your life or the world at large. You could mine the content for later use, or make use of the process of exploration to put to use in creating works of similar depth in other media or other books.
Techniques covered in this class will include working in the abstract by choosing color palette and shape, image transfers using inkjet paper, water, gel medium, moving to using figures comfortably by altering magazine images, packing tape transfers, manipulating copies of images by mark making, simple scrubbed backgrounds, an easy technique for making sketchbook pages have color and texture without preciousness, using spackle and tissue for texture, and much discussion on choosing content.
